Brian Spence has been involved in the music industry for over 16 years. Originally from Glasgow, Brian managed a very successful entertainment company which grew from a fun pub venue in his native Scotland to other places within the UK and took him as far afield as Blackpool where he had an army of presenters working for him.
An all round entertainer, Brian’s many talents include singing, playing guitar, compere, karaoke presenter and night club DJ.
He has a good following of Holiday Makers who return to see him time and time again ply his trade in Benidorm.
He is currently working at the Village Pub, which is one of the Vincent’s Group on Calle Lepanto, Benidorm and also at the New Yorker Karaoke Bar situated on Avenida De Almeria again in the New Town of Benidorm.
The spotlight for this week’s Benidorm Focus falls on a guy who has been in and around the Costa Blanca area for about 11 years and has worked as a Compere, DJ, Karaoke Presenter and Quizmaster.
Al has worked in all the top clubs and holiday venues in the UK when the ‘Club Scene’ was in its heyday as well as touring places as far afield as Corfu, Majorca and the Costa Del Sol and doing broadcasts for BBC Radio 2.
He worked as entertainments manager for many of the leading holiday companies and as such employed a couple of Benidorm artistes when they were just beginning their journey into show business namely comedian Mickey Lewis and singer Mathew of Mathew and Son.
Al first appeared over here on the Costa Blanca as far back as the sixties at a venue by the name of Capone’s Cabaret Bar and in the seventies at the Cafe Benidorm.
Some of the names that Al appeared with over the years include Archie Andrews and Brough, Tommy Trinder, Bert Weedon, Craig Douglas, Bob Monkhouse, Frank Ifield and numerous other celebrities.
Al does not take all this lightly in fact he told me he considers himself very privileged to have come through some great eras. He still has all the musical arrangements from when he sang with the Big Bands of Swing.
Al is semi-retired now but still enjoys singing at various venues whether it be at home in the UK or out here in Spain. Last year he worked many Hotels over here in addition to the Clansman, Cumberland Bar,The Beatles, Presleys and the Two Seals Bar and has work lined up this year as he will be in the area until April.
