Jamie has been singing professionally for around 2 years on the Pub & Club circuit of Scotland. He started out his musical career as a drummer and after a few years of playing with various bands and groups was approached by an agent who offered Jamie work as a solo artist as he was impressed with the vocals Jamie was singing. After a few weeks of getting a show together, Jamie grasped the opportunity to become a solo performer and has never looked back.
His main influences over the years have been Neil Diamond and Barry White although within his show he does music from the 50’s 60’s and 70’s together with the odd Country and Western number so there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Whilst Jamie has only been here on the Costa Blanca for a little under six months he is no stranger to the area as he came over as a holiday maker a few times before deciding to have a go at living here.
Back in Glasgow he was a delivery driver before becoming a singer and had always fancied living abroad so this year he made the move together with his wife Janette who gave up her career as a nurse to be with him.
On chatting with Jamie, he informed me that one of our mutual friends, Dave Peterson had been very helpful in getting him started and would like to publicly thank him through this article for setting him on the road to success.
The spotlight for this week’s Benidorm article falls on Jamie Spence, a singer who hails from the Easterhouse area of Glasgow and has only been here on the Costa Blanca for a relatively short amount of time.
After a reasonable summer and Autumn season here in Spain, Derek returned to the UK and began work on a Neil Diamond tribute show. On his return to Benidorm, November saw him perform in Tommy’s Bar and the occasional night at the Tavern.
After the Christmas period things got a little slow due to the exchange rate and the credit problems holiday makers were encountering and for a while Derek contemplated returning to the UK until the manager at Rockerfellas, Ashley approached him about the possibility of performing his tribute show. Derek snapped up the chance and has been there ever since and is proving very successful.
The shows have been filmed by Viva Television and will be screened later this year. Also a DVD is being made which will be on general sale in the very near future.
Derek’s show has brought interest from many parts including Corfu, Majorca and even the possibility of a cruise later this year.
Derek is keen to stress however that wherever the summer months may take him his first love is Benidorm and he will return towards the Autumn.
I have been asked to include a big thank you to all the staff at Rockerfellas in this article and in particular Dino the lighting engineer for help making the show the success it has been.
If you would like to see Derek Maddison’s tribute to Neil Diamond you can catch him exclusively at Rockerfellas six nights a week.
