After almost a year of writing about various venues and many artistes in the Benidorm area I have received many enquiries as to why I have never done an article on the Cumberland Bar. The answer is quite simple, firstly I never really gave it a thought and secondly I find it quite difficult to do a write up on myself but after being asked by a few of our regulars I have succumbed to pressure and find myself penning an article about Yvonne and yours truly.
The Cumberland Bar is situated in the walkway between Calle Gerona and Av Mediterraneo opposite the Ambassador Playa II Hotel and next door to the Benidorm Joke Shop.
Nigel and Yvonne the current owners have been in charge for two years although Nigel was a partner in the business for a year prior to taking the bar on fully. Before moving to Benidorm Nigel was in the Army for a little over 26 years being a saxophone and clarinet player with the Band of the Grenadier Guards and attaining the status of a senior non-commissioned officer. As such he was regularly seen taking part in all major State Ceremonial Occasions including Trooping the Colour, State Opening of Parliament and many Official State Visits. Perhaps the most high profile event in his career was the State Funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother when he was in charge of all the music played on the parade from start to finish and as such had to co-ordinate with many musicians from various corners of the globe to ensure they were playing the correct music at the correct time. His travels took him to many places including Australia, USA, Canada, Belize, Hong Kong, Cyprus, Bosnia and many countries across Western Europe. As an avid sports fan, in 1986 he took up football refereeing and has officiated at very senior level in addition to being a Football Association Licensed Referee Instructor. Yvonne on the other hand worked in the NHS for 22 years as a commissioning manager for Primary Care Services for Nottingham City PCT and as such was responsible for the contracts for Doctors, Dentists, Pharmacies and Opticians covering the whole of Nottinghamshire. Whilst bringing up a family she also managed to earn a masters degree in business studies and trained for and acquired a black belt in karate. Her successful singing career took her nationwide entertaining using the stage name Carlita.
The Cumberland Bar is mainly geared towards the more mature audience with the tongue in cheek Sports and Social Club meeting 6 afternoons a week with our very own Concert Chairman. Karaoke is the main entertainment in the bar taking up every evening except Tuesday when we host the fun quiz with Rim. Drinks are very reasonably priced with San Miguel beer starting at just 1.50 euros a pint. There are also various special offers on sale throughout the year.
